In brief

What works, what to weigh

+

Strengths

3 reasons to book
  • Walkable centre-of-Ubud address — The hostel is on Monkey Forest Road, a 6-minute stroll from Saraswati Temple and 150 metres from the Football Field bus stop, with Monkey Forest and shops nearby.
  • Free breakfast served in the restaurant — Guests repeatedly mention a proper cooked breakfast with banana pancakes — not just instant noodles — served in the in-house restaurant rather than a bagged meal.
  • Privacy-focused dorm beds — Bunks come with curtains, individual lights, and lockers or under-bed storage for bags, a detail guests call out for comfort and security.

Worth weighing

4 to weigh
  • Mixed experiences with breakfast and dining — While many guests praise breakfast, one review calls it 'forgettable' and the restaurant's other food 'mediocre'. Expect inconsistency rather than a guaranteed standout meal.
  • WiFi limited to public areas — The listing specifies free WiFi only in common spaces, and one guest says you 'can struggle to connect wherever you go', suggesting patchy signal even there.
  • Air conditioning can be unreliable — One review notes the AC not working in the dorm, and the hostel's energy-saving practice of turning off AC in the afternoon is mentioned by another guest.
  • Low overall rating against area average — At 7.9/10 from 428 reviews, Aru House sits below the Ubud area average of 8.7, despite strong scores for Staff (8.8) and Service (8.0).

“Loved our stay. The location was ideal, with Monkey Forest, restaurants, bars, and shops all within walking distance. Beds were comfy and private thanks to curtains. Great water pressure and hot water in the shower. Free drinking water and big lockers were a plus. Staff were always around to help and booked our Mt Batur sunrise tour. Breakfast surprised us — served in a proper restaurant and was excellent. The common area was lovely.”

“Fantastic spot. Comfortable, clean bed and a privacy curtain. Breakfast was a nice surprise, not just instant noodles. Friendly staff helped with my backpack and gave useful info.”

“The restaurant's food is average, and breakfast is unremarkable. The dorm balcony is good for fresh air, especially when the AC isn't working. Free WiFi in public areas means you may struggle to get a signal.”
